A message from the Mission Bit community

Across the country, we are seeing a movement to combat violence and systemic racism toward the Black community. We mourn the loss of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Tony McDade, Ahmaud Arbery, Eric Garner, Treyvon Martin, Tamir Rice, Stephon Clark, Alton Sterling, Philando Castile, Dominique Clayton, Bettie Jones, Atatiana Jefferson, Botham Jean, Walter Scott, and so many more. We are angered by the senseless killings that have affected the Black community and as an organization, we support those who are speaking up about the much-needed change we as a society need to make.

In these times, we are reminded that when we see injustice, it is up to us to advocate for the communities we serve. At Mission Bit, we stand in solidarity with the Black community. We stand against the racial and social injustices they face. We are in a time where voices need to be heard, NOW, and moving forward. We are using our platform to shine a light on what matters to us and encourage you to do the same. The fight against injustice and systematic oppression in this country must be heard.

As an organization, we live by our five core values; community, love, accountability, social justice, and smart risk. Mission Bit was founded to provide equal opportunity and access to computer science for marginalized communities. Educational inequality continues to exist all over the U.S. through the unequal distribution of resources which we see it firsthand in the San Francisco Bay Area- specifically in communities that are historically disadvantaged and oppressed. As we serve our Black students, we must ensure that we create environments where they can thrive- environments that are emotionally and physically safe. We continue to fight for our youth, to educate them, to inspire them, and prepare them to be the next generation of leaders.
