The power of goodwill giving: Why tech companies must step up now more than ever
At Mission Bit, we believe that every student deserves the opportunity to explore the world of technology, regardless of their background. The support of tech companies through goodwill giving has been crucial in making this vision a reality. Now, more than ever, this type of corporate generosity is needed to bridge gaps in education, equity, and opportunity.
Why goodwill giving matters
The tech industry has the power to change lives—not just through innovation but through direct investment in the future workforce. Goodwill giving from tech companies provides students with access to free coding classes, mentorship, and real-world experiences that they might not otherwise receive. By investing in programs like Mission Bit, these companies are ensuring that the next generation of tech leaders is diverse, talented, and empowered.
Companies making an impact
We are fortunate to have partnered with incredible companies that believe in the power of education and equity. Organizations like Google.org, 1Password, Electronic Arts (EA), and LinkedIn have generously supported Mission Bit through grants, employee engagement, and funding initiatives that allow us to continue offering free coding education to underrepresented youth. Their commitment to goodwill giving directly contributes to our students’ success and future aspirations.
A student’s journey: Isabella’s story
To truly understand the impact of goodwill giving, look no further than Isabella, a Mission Bit alumna and Student Ambassador. Her story exemplifies the resilience, determination, and success that result from access to tech education.
Isabella immigrated to the U.S. from Colombia just three years ago, facing numerous challenges as she and her family adapted to a new culture, language, and way of life. Her father transitioned from being a co-pilot to a delivery person, and her mother became a Spanish preschool teacher. Despite these difficulties, Isabella remained determined to succeed.
She recalls how intimidating coding once seemed:
“The complicated-looking algorithms of programming languages intimidated me at first. They seemed like a challenging and boring task of problem-solving and complex patterns, but when I finally finished my first project, my first website, it became something I never thought I would accomplish, something to be proud of and to motivate me in this journey.”
Mission Bit provided her with a community that not only taught her how to code but also empowered her to believe in her abilities.
“Mission Bit helped me in this process. Their interactive and beginner-friendly classes prompted me to keep discovering new concepts and coding techniques, to expand my horizons, develop unexpected passions, and help me shape my career goals.”
Now, Isabella is pursuing her dreams of merging technology and medicine, with the goal of making healthcare more efficient, accessible, and patient-centered. As a Student Ambassador, she hopes to inspire others from underrepresented backgrounds to pursue their goals with confidence.
“I aim to inspire students from underrepresented backgrounds, showing them that they, too, can have a chance and thrive in whatever they set their mind to. That they are capable of achieving their goals, and that they have a place in fields like tech, or medicine, or anything they want to do and learn.”
The time to act is now
The need for goodwill giving has never been greater. As disparities in access to tech education persist, corporate support is essential in ensuring that students like Isabella continue to have the opportunities they deserve. By investing in Mission Bit and similar organizations, tech companies can make a tangible difference in shaping the future of innovation and equity.
To our corporate partners—thank you for your generosity. To those looking to make an impact—there is no better time than now. Together, we can build a more inclusive tech industry and empower students to create a brighter future.
