Celebrating Women’s History Month: Empowering future women in tech
As Women’s History Month comes to a close, we want to take a moment to celebrate the incredible contributions of women in technology and education. At Mission Bit, we believe in the power of representation and creating opportunities for young women to thrive in the tech industry. Through our free coding courses, workshops, and community programs, we’re dedicated to breaking down barriers and fostering an inclusive environment where everyone can succeed.
Why representation matters in tech
The tech industry has historically lacked gender diversity, with women, especially women of color, being underrepresented. According to a 2023 report by the National Center for Women & Information Technology (NCWIT), women make up only 26% of the computing workforce, and the numbers are even lower for Black, Latinx, and Indigenous women. This disparity underscores the need for organizations like Mission Bit to provide accessible and equitable tech education.
At Mission Bit, we’re proud to champion a future where young women have the confidence and resources to pursue careers in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math). Our programs prioritize not only technical skills but also community, mentorship, and personal growth.
Stories of empowerment: Women at Mission Bit
Our community is filled with inspiring young women who are transforming their futures through coding. Karina A., one of our students, shared her journey into tech:
“I felt intimidated by learning to code. Mission Bit was a great place where I could start as a beginner. I wanted to learn something new and was grateful for the supportive environment where I felt encouraged every step of the way.” – Karina A.
Karina’s story is a testament to the power of providing inclusive spaces where young women can explore and grow without fear. Through our coding courses, workshops, and community support, we’re helping to bridge the gender gap in tech, one student at a time.
Our commitment to inclusion
Our work is grounded in our core values: social justice, love, accountability, community, and smart risks. These values drive us to create programs that uplift historically marginalized communities and provide the resources needed to succeed in a rapidly evolving tech landscape. As we close out Women’s History Month, we reaffirm our commitment to empowering the next generation of female tech leaders.
Looking ahead: How you can support women in tech
While Women’s History Month may be ending, our work to foster gender equity continues year-round. Here are some ways you can support women in tech and our mission:
- Volunteer: Share your expertise and guide the next generation of women in STEM through our programs.
- Donate: Your contributions help us offer free, high-quality coding education to underserved students. Support our mission here.
- Spread the word: Amplify stories like Karina’s and advocate for inclusive education in your community.
Together, we can create a future where every young woman has the opportunity to thrive in tech. Thank you for celebrating Women’s History Month with us—let’s keep building a more inclusive future, one line of code at a time.
