    This class is sponsored by The Oakland Public Ed Fund and is run in direct collaboration with TechLink, one of Oakland Ed Fund’s programs. Eligible students may qualify to earn a stipend upon completion of the course.

    This project-based class combines design and technology to create and code our own modern, creative, and thoughtful websites. We’ll discover what great user experience is, exercise creative project planning, create beautiful visual designs, and bring our designs to life in a final interactive website. Beginners welcome!

    What you’ll learn

    Build the content and structure of a website with HTML and add style and design to your website with CSS.

    UI & UX

    Create an appealing and impactful design as well as a functional and accessible experience.

    Prototyping

    Use Figma to create a draft of your product and make improvements.

    You’ll embark on an exciting journey into the world of creating stunning websites in this class! You’ll learn the fundamental building blocks of web design, including HTML, CSS, UI (User Interface), and UX (User Experience).

    In the first part of the course, you’ll dive into HTML, the language that forms the backbone of every web page. You’ll learn how to structure and organize content using HTML tags, create headings, paragraphs, lists, and add images and links. Through hands-on exercises, you’ll gain the skills to create the structure and layout of a webpage.

    Next, we’ll explore CSS, the language that brings style and visual appeal to web pages. You’ll learn how to use CSS to control colors, fonts, backgrounds, and layout properties. Discover the power of CSS selectors and how they enable you to apply styles to specific elements. Through guided projects, you’ll develop the ability to make your web pages visually engaging and aesthetically pleasing.

    In the following part of the class, we’ll delve into the world of UI and UX. You’ll learn how to design user interfaces that are intuitive and user-friendly. Understand the principles of visual hierarchy, layout, and typography to create visually compelling designs. Gain insights into user experience design, considering how users interact with your website and ensuring a seamless and enjoyable browsing experience.

    By the end of this class, you’ll have a solid foundation in HTML, CSS, UI, and UX. You’ll be equipped with the skills to create and design your own websites, combining structure, style, and user experience. Join us and unlock the potential to craft captivating web experiences that captivate and engage users!

    Projects you’ll create

    • Tribute website: Create your own website about someone or something you look up to!
    • Instagram profile: Re-create an Instagram profile, complete with a grid of pictures, links, and all other appropriate design
    • Capstone: Create your very own website! Use all the skills you’ve learned in the class to design something of your very own

    How much is the stipend?

    $18/hour

    Do I have to have a certain computer or software for this class?

    In this class, everything we do is browser-based, meaning you don’t need to download any software, and you can work on almost any device, including laptops and Chromebooks. Mission Bit is happy to provide a free laptop to any student who needs one for class.

    Is previous computer science or design experience necessary?

    Our class is completely beginner-friendly. No previous experience is necessary! We’ll teach you everything you need to know. Come learn with us!

    I just graduated middle school and I’m starting high school in the fall. Can I still apply?

    Yes! All students ages 14-18 are welcome to apply.

    How much does this class cost? What supplies do I need for this class?

    Mission Bit classes are completely free! For Web Design, you’ll need a computer (Chromebooks are okay) that can connect to the Internet. If you’d like to borrow a computer for class, Mission Bit is happy to provide you with a free laptop.
