1. What information do we collect?

Personal information you disclose to us

We collect personal information that you voluntarily provide to us when you express interest in our programs, apply to or participate in our programs (including through our program application), donate or purchase event tickets, or otherwise contact us.

Sensitive information

When necessary, with your consent or as otherwise permitted by applicable law, we process the following categories of sensitive information:

Financial data (for donations and event/ticket transactions)
Race or ethnic origin (self-reported by students in our program application)
Student and education data (see Section 10, “Student and Minor Data,” below)

All personal information that you provide to us must be true, complete, and accurate, and you must notify us of any changes to such information.

Information automatically collected

Some information — such as your IP address and browser and device characteristics — is collected automatically when you visit our Services. This includes log and usage data, device data, and (where enabled) location data. This information does not reveal your specific identity and is used primarily to maintain security and operation of our Services and for internal analytics.

Information collected from other sources

We may obtain limited information about you from public databases, joint marketing partners, affiliate programs, data providers, and other third parties, for purposes such as targeted advertising and event promotion.

To deliver and facilitate delivery of our program and education services
To evaluate program outcomes and improve our curriculum, marketing, and your experience

3. When and with whom do we share your personal information?

We may need to share your personal information in the following situations:

Business transfers — in connection with a merger, sale of assets, financing, or acquisition
With service providers who perform services on our behalf, under written contract
With school district partners, where applicable, to coordinate program delivery

We do not sell personal information, and we have not disclosed, sold, or shared personal information to third parties for a business or commercial purpose in the preceding twelve months.

4. Do we use cookies and other tracking technologies?

We may use cookies and similar tracking technologies (like web beacons and pixels) to maintain security, prevent crashes, fix bugs, save preferences, and support basic site functions. We also permit third parties and service providers to use tracking technologies on our Services for analytics and advertising.

Google Analytics

5. How long do we keep your information?

We do not use account-based retention; we keep personal information only for as long as necessary to fulfill the purposes described in this Privacy Notice, unless a longer period is required by law (such as grant-reporting, tax, or accounting requirements). In general:

Program application and education data: for the duration of the student’s participation in our programs, plus a limited period afterward for program evaluation and grant-reporting purposes
Donation and event data: as needed for financial recordkeeping and compliance
Marketing contact data: until you unsubscribe or request deletion

When we no longer have a legitimate need to retain your information, we delete or anonymize it, or, if that isn’t possible (e.g., backup archives), we securely isolate it from further processing until deletion is possible.

6. How do we keep your information safe?

We have implemented appropriate technical and organizational security measures designed to protect the personal information we process. However, no method of transmission or storage is 100% secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security. Transmission of personal information to and from our Services is at your own risk.

Withdrawing your consent

If we rely on your consent to process your information, you may withdraw it at any time by contacting us using the details in “How Can You Contact Us About This Notice?” below. Withdrawal does not affect the lawfulness of processing before withdrawal.

Opting out of marketing communications

You can unsubscribe from marketing and promotional communications at any time via the unsubscribe link in our emails, or by contacting us at info@missionbit.org. You may still receive service-related messages necessary for administering your (or your student’s) participation in our programs.

8. Controls for Do-Not-Track features

Most web browsers include a Do-Not-Track (“DNT”) feature. Because no uniform standard for recognizing DNT signals has been finalized, we do not currently respond to DNT signals. If a legal standard is adopted, we will update this notice accordingly.

9. Do United States residents have specific privacy rights?

If you are a resident of California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Maryland, Minnesota, Montana, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New Jersey, Oregon, Rhode Island, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, or Virginia, you may have the right to request access to and details about the personal information we maintain about you, correct inaccuracies, get a copy of, or delete your personal information, and withdraw consent. These rights may be limited by applicable law.

How to exercise your rights

Under certain state laws, you may designate an authorized agent to submit a request on your behalf; we may require proof of that authorization. We will verify your identity before acting on a request, using only the information necessary for verification.

Appeals

If we decline to act on your request, you may appeal by emailing info@missionbit.org. We will respond in writing with the outcome and reasoning. If your appeal is denied, you may contact your state attorney general.

California “Shine the Light” law

California residents may request, once a year and free of charge, information about categories of personal information (if any) we disclosed to third parties for direct marketing purposes in the prior calendar year. Submit such requests to info@missionbit.org.

10. Student and minor data

Because our programs serve high school students, we collect certain information directly from students through our program application and course platforms, such as name, contact information, school, coursework and progress data, and (where relevant to program design) self-reported demographic information such as race or ethnicity.

Parental/guardian notification: where a student is under 18, we notify the student’s parent or guardian in connection with their participation in our programs.
No account credentials: our program application collects data as students use it; we do not maintain a traditional login/account system for the purposes described in this notice.
Use of student data: we use this information to deliver our programs, evaluate program effectiveness, and satisfy grant- and funder-reporting requirements. We do not sell student data or use it for targeted advertising.
School partnerships: where we operate in partnership with a school or school district, some student information may be shared with that partner as needed to coordinate program delivery, consistent with our agreements with them.

11. Mobile information

No mobile information will be shared with third parties/affiliates for marketing/promotional purposes. All the above categories exclude text messaging originator opt-in data and consent; this information will not be shared with any third parties.

12. Do we make updates to this notice?

We may update this Privacy Notice from time to time. The updated version will be indicated by a revised “Last updated” date. If we make material changes, we will notify you by prominently posting a notice or directly notifying you.
